Chapter 11 of our textbook, Bedford Book of Genres, provides information and guidance on how to select a research topic and formulate a research proposal. Taking into consideration the copious amounts of information, topics, and means of going about things, it instructs you to begin with a basic idea that will develop into a narrower proposal given the amount of time available to conduct such a research paper. The author uses Jasmine Huerta as an example to further provide insight, deciding on which view point to commit to, uses of reliable research articles, and focusing on selecting a topic of your interest. Through Jasmine’s process of writing her research paper, Ethos, and Logos, Braziller specifically guides you how to select and personalize your research proposal. Similar to the way the author suggested starting off basic in your research topics, he suggested the same be applied to the way you research your topic. Giving the example of Jasmine beginning with the use of the untrustworthy Wikipedia to gain a general understanding to then building and narrowing your selected scholarly articles. Following, the student is ready to establish a research proposal and progress to writing their first draft.
